It is a non-powered cardioid pattern microphone, and does not require phantom power. The SM57 is best used for metal vocals or to mic instruments, and is not recommended for vocals in a studio environment. The SM58 is a better option for vocals. The microphone is extremely rugged and versatile, making it an excellent workhorse of a studio mic. The sound quality is great for amplifying a cajon or a steel string acoustic guitar in a band mix. While it may not be the best solution for more intricate or boomy instrument sounds, the SM57 is still an affordable option that does a very decent job. Customers generally enjoy the SM57, but some have found it to be pricey or lacking accessories like microphone clip.
