  • In this book, motivation of academic employees and students at a technical university for creative R&D work is investigated. This study is used to evaluate the efficiency of the current R&D performance management system at the Czech Technical University (CTU) in light of current theory.Evaluation of and motivation for scientific work at technical universities as well as associated performance management, with emphasis on results, is of primary interest to any university manager involved in this part of a university’s business. More generally, similar principles will be of interest to any manager who runs a creative or R&D department.The book:Discusses various roots of and methods for motivating university R&D workers in light of existing motivation theories developed in the literatureInvestigates by means of a questionnaire among our alumni (1, 5 and 10 years after graduation) their views on student participation and motivation for work in R&D during their studies, from the viewpoint of the current roles performed by the alumniEvaluates the current R&D motivation system at CTU, and make proposals to improve it. Makes some brief hints on the change management involved in the possible implementation processSome of the results of the investigations reported in this work have brought new insights into the motivation of both staff and students at CTU. A number of recommendations on improving the system is presented.Students are keen to work on creative tasks, even if it involves more work. It is a pity to waste their efforts and talents on dull and useless school exercises. Students should be fully involved in the motivation schemes of CTU.· More stress should therefore be put on quality criteria for advisors. After all, a good professor and a great student are the best team ever invented for R&D work.· CTU still has plenty of scope for improving the work conditions made available for both academics and students. Greater concentration of money in fewer areas would help. However, money is not a panacea. An approach to students that involves them in the R&D issues of the departmental research teams will help considerably.The author hopes that this contribution to the important debate on ways of motivating creative workers will be read with interest and then implemented, perhaps in ways unforeseen by the author.
